Magnesium ribbon
Product Overview & Quality
- Product Name: Magnesium ribbon
- Grade: Laboratory Grade (Lab Grade), ideal for educational demonstrations, general chemical reactions, and synthesis.
- Physical Properties: Thin, flexible metallic ribbon; silver-white appearance with a metallic luster.
- Key Use: Commonly used in combustion experiments (producing intense white light), Grignard reagent preparation, and hydrogen gas generation.
Safety & Hazards (Critical)
- Classification: Flammable Solid; readily ignited by sparks or flames.
- Water Reactivity: Contact with water or moisture may release highly flammable hydrogen gas.
- Eye Hazard: Do NOT look directly at burning magnesium. The combustion produces high-intensity UV light that can cause permanent retinal damage (photokeratitis).
- First Aid Measures: In case of thermal burns, cool with running water. If metal fragments enter the eyes, flush with water and seek immediate medical attention.
Handling & Storage
- Storage: Store in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place. Keep in tightly sealed containers away from heat, sparks, and open flames. Prevent exposure to moisture to avoid oxidation ($MgO$ formation).
- Precautions: Wear standard PPE, including gloves and safety goggles (or UV protective glasses for combustion). Never use water or $CO_2$ fire extinguishers on magnesium fires; use dry sand or Class D dry powder extinguishers instead.
