Sal ammoniac or Ammonium hydrochloride or Hydrochloric acid ammonium salt
Product Overview & Quality
- Product Name: Ammonium chloride 99.8% or Sal ammoniac or Ammonium hydrochloride or Hydrochloric acid ammonium salt
- Brand: QReC (Product Code: QR-A5058-1-1000)
- Grade: Analytical Reagent High Purity Grade (AR Grade) featuring an exceptional certified chemical assay of not less than 99.8 percent in a 1,000 g (1 kg) container. Manufactured, purified, and crystallized under strict QReC global laboratory specifications without anti-caking conditioning agents. Strictly tested to enforce an ultra-low residue on ignition (strictly below 0.005 percent), alongside minimal ppm thresholds of sulfate, nitrate, phosphate, water-insoluble matter, and trace heavy metals (such as iron, lead, copper, zinc, magnesium, calcium, and arsenic). Conforms to certified DNase and RNase-free specifications, ensuring biological purity. Dry, uniform crystals dissolve cleanly and rapidly in water, yielding transparent, neutral-to-acidic, particulate-free solutions. Packaged in a heavy-duty, moisture-barrier polymer container equipped with a hermetic seal.
- Physical Properties: Colorless crystals, crystalline granules, or fine white crystalline powder. Odorless with a cooling, sharp saline taste. Slightly hygroscopic in humid air. Readily sublimes at elevated temperatures above 338 degrees Celsius, dissociating thermally into gaseous ammonia and hydrogen chloride. Non-combustible inorganic solid. Aqueous solutions are mildly acidic (pH approximately 4.5 to 5.5 for a 5 percent aqueous solution at room temperature).
- Solubility: Readily and highly soluble in water (approximately 37 to 38 grams per 100 milliliters at 20 degrees Celsius; dissolution is a pronounced endothermic process absorbing significant thermal energy, causing the solution vessel to feel ice-cold, with solubility escalating to over 75 grams per 100 milliliters in boiling water); soluble in glycerol; moderately soluble in ethanol and methanol; practically insoluble in diethyl ether and acetone.
- Key Use: Universally utilized as the primary acidic buffer component paired with concentrated aqueous ammonia to prepare standard Ammonia-Ammonium Chloride Buffer systems (pH 9.0 to 10.0) for complexometric EDTA titrations of total water hardness and divalent metal cations (calcium and magnesium). Heavily employed in immunology, hematology, and cell biology as the principal active agent in Ammonium-Chloride-Potassium (ACK) lysing buffers for selectively lysing erythrocytes (red blood cells) while preserving mononuclear leukocytes intact. Extensively applied as a high-purity inorganic nitrogen source in microbiological culture media and industrial yeast fermentation broths. Serves as a soldering flux and metal surface cleaning agent in metallurgical research. Functions as an analytical reference standard for calibrating ion-selective electrodes and in routine wet chemical analysis.
Safety & Hazards (Harmful Ingestion & Serious Eye Irritation)
- Classification: Harmful if swallowed (Acute Toxicity Oral Category 4). Causes serious eye irritation (Eye Irritation Category 2).
- Health Risks: Direct ocular contact triggers acute stinging pain, conjunctival redness, corneal irritation, and profuse lacrimation. Prolonged or repeated dermal contact can cause localized dryness, erythema, or superficial contact irritation. Inhalation of particulate dust irritates the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract, inducing coughing, sneezing, and throat dryness. Ingestion of substantial quantities provokes acute gastrointestinal irritation, epigastric pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and can induce systemic metabolic acidosis and hyperammonemia, particularly in individuals with impaired hepatic or renal function.
- First Aid Measures: Immediately flush affected eyes with an abundant stream of clean flowing water for at least 15 minutes while stripping contaminated clothing; remove contact lenses promptly and seek medical attention if irritation persists. Wash exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water. In case of dust inhalation, relocate the individual to fresh air. If accidentally swallowed in significant quantities, rinse mouth thoroughly, administer water in moderate amounts, and seek medical advice promptly.
Handling & Storage
- Storage: Hygroscopic Salt with Critical Alkali Incompatibility. Exposure to ambient humidity induces gradual caking. Must be preserved in its original, tightly closed QReC container. Store in a clean, strictly dry, cool, and well-ventilated dedicated chemical store at controlled temperatures (below 25 to 30 degrees Celsius), sheltered from atmospheric moisture and direct sunlight. “Critical Incompatibility Mandate: Keep strictly segregated from strong caustic alkalis (such as sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide), as contact instantaneously liberates toxic, suffocating ammonia gas.” Keep segregated from strong oxidizing agents (such as chlorates and nitrates), nitrites, and heavy metal salts.
- Precautions: Standard laboratory PPE is mandatory, including protective nitrile gloves, splash-proof safety glasses, and a protective lab coat. Re-seal container cap tightly immediately after sampling to prevent moisture absorption and caking. Minimize dust generation during weighing and dispensing.
