Diethyl Ether (Ethyl Ether)
Product Overview & Quality
- Product Name: Diethyl Ether (Ethyl Ether)
- Grade: Analytical Reagent (AR Grade), > 99.5% purity. Packed in 2.5 L containers for high-volume laboratory applications requiring superior purity and low residue.
- Physical Properties: Clear, colorless, highly volatile liquid with a sweet, pungent, and characteristic odor.
- Key Use: Widely used as a solvent for liquid-liquid extraction, a medium for Grignard reactions, and in pharmaceutical and forensic analysis.
Safety & Hazards
- Classification: Extremely Flammable Liquid (Category 1). Vapors are heavier than air and can travel to ignition sources and flash back.
- Chemical Warning: Peroxide Formation. Diethyl ether reacts with atmospheric oxygen to form explosive peroxides upon prolonged storage or exposure to light. Never distill or evaporate to dryness without checking for peroxides.
- Health Risks: Central Nervous System (CNS) depressant. Inhalation causes dizziness, headaches, and anesthesia. Prolonged skin contact causes defatting and dermatitis.
- First Aid Measures: Move the victim to fresh air immediately if inhaled. Flush eyes or skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes.
Handling & Storage
- Storage: Store in a cool, dark, and well-ventilated area in tightly sealed amber bottles. Keep strictly away from heat, sparks, open flames, and direct sunlight. Use explosion-proof storage cabinets.
- Precautions: Full PPE is mandatory. Handle strictly inside a certified fume hood. Do not use near non-explosion-proof electrical equipment.
