Sodium carbonate anhydrous

Soda ash or Calcined soda or Disodium carbonate or Anhydrous washing soda

Product Overview & Quality

  • Product Name: Sodium carbonate anhydrous 99.9% or Soda ash or Calcined soda or Disodium carbonate or Anhydrous washing soda
  • Brand: QReC (Product Code: QR-S5039-1-0500)
  • Grade: Analytical Reagent High Purity / Primary Standard Grade (AR Grade) featuring an exceptional certified chemical assay of not less than 99.9 percent after drying at 300 degrees Celsius in a 500 g container. Manufactured, purified, and calcined under strict QReC global laboratory specifications without anti-caking additives. Strictly tested to enforce an ultra-low loss on drying (strictly below 0.5 percent), alongside minimal ppm thresholds of chloride, sulfate, phosphate, silicate, total nitrogen, and water-insoluble matter. Trace heavy metals (such as iron, lead, copper, zinc, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and arsenic) are strictly controlled at ultra-low parts-per-million levels. Uniform, dry white crystalline granules dissolve cleanly and completely in water, yielding crystal-clear, alkaline solutions without turbidity or silica residue. Packaged in a heavy-duty, moisture-barrier polymer container equipped with a hermetic seal to prevent atmospheric hydration and carbonation.
  • Physical Properties: White granular powder or fine white crystalline powder. Odorless with an astringent, alkaline-saline taste. Hygroscopic under ambient atmospheric conditions, gradually absorbing atmospheric moisture to form sodium carbonate monohydrate and carbon dioxide to convert into sodium bicarbonate. Non-combustible inorganic solid. Aqueous solutions are moderately strongly basic (pH approximately 11.5 to 11.6 for a 5 percent aqueous solution at room temperature) and irritating to tissues.
  • Solubility: Readily and highly soluble in water (approximately 21 to 22 grams per 100 milliliters at 20 degrees Celsius; dissolution of the anhydrous form is a pronounced exothermic process liberating heat, reaching maximum solubility of approximately 45 to 48 grams per 100 milliliters at 35.4 degrees Celsius); freely soluble in glycerol; practically insoluble in ethanol, methanol, and diethyl ether.
  • Key Use: Universally utilized as a world-standard Primary Standard in volumetric quantitative analysis for the standard calibration and standardization of secondary standard mineral acid solutions (such as hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid titrants) using methyl orange or bromocresol green indicators. Heavily applied as a standard alkaline fusion flux paired with potassium carbonate in analytical mineralogy for decomposing refractory geological ores, silicates, and insoluble matrix materials for elemental spectroscopic analysis. Serves as a mild, versatile inorganic base in synthetic organic chemistry, driving nucleophilic substitutions, alkylations, acylations, and neutralization workups. Extensively employed in preparing alkaline Carbonate-Bicarbonate Buffer systems (pH 9.2 to 10.7) for biochemical assays and immunology (such as antigen coating protocols in ELISA platforms). Widely used as a water softening agent, pH regulator, and precipitant for sequestering divalent calcium and magnesium hardness in environmental analytical research.

Safety & Hazards (Serious Eye Irritation & Alkaline Irritant)

  • Classification: Causes serious eye irritation (Eye Irritation Category 2). May cause mild skin and respiratory tract irritation.
  • Health Risks: Aqueous matrices are alkaline. Direct ocular contact triggers acute burning pain, intense stinging, conjunctival erythema, corneal irritation, edema, and lacrimation. Prolonged dermal contact strips natural cutaneous sebum, producing localized dryness, scaling, superficial caustic irritation, and erythema. Inhalation of particulate dust irritates the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract, inducing coughing, sneezing, and throat discomfort. Ingestion of substantial quantities provokes acute gastrointestinal irritation, caustic burning of the oral cavity and stomach, abdominal cramping, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
  • First Aid Measures: Immediately flush affected eyes with an abundant stream of clean flowing water for at least 15 minutes while stripping contaminated clothing; remove contact lenses promptly and seek medical attention if irritation persists. Wash exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water. In case of dust inhalation, rapidly relocate the victim to fresh air. If accidentally swallowed, do NOT induce vomiting; thoroughly rinse mouth, administer water in moderate amounts to dilute the base, and seek prompt medical attention.

Handling & Storage

  • Storage: Hygroscopic, Carbon Dioxide-Sensitive Alkaline Solid. Ambient atmospheric exposure triggers moisture uptake and gradual conversion into bicarbonate, compromising primary standard titer integrity. Must be preserved in its original, tightly closed QReC container. Store in a clean, strictly dry, cool, and well-ventilated dedicated chemical store at controlled temperatures (below 25 to 30 degrees Celsius), sheltered from atmospheric moisture and direct sunlight. Keep strictly segregated from concentrated mineral acids (violent exothermic neutralization with vigorous effervescence of carbon dioxide gas occurs upon contact), strong oxidizing agents, fluorine, and aluminum metal.
  • Precautions: Standard laboratory PPE is mandatory, including protective nitrile gloves, splash-proof safety goggles, a certified particulate dust mask, and a protective lab coat. Re-seal container cap tightly immediately after sampling to preserve its certified primary standard purity. Minimize dust generation during weighing and dispensing.
