Ammonium acetate

Acetic acid ammonium salt or Ammonium ethanoate

Product Overview & Quality

  • Product Name: Ammonium acetate 98% or Acetic acid ammonium salt or Ammonium ethanoat
  • Brand: QReC (Product Code: QR-A5034-1-0500)
  • Grade: Analytical Reagent High Purity Grade (AR Grade / HPLC-MS Grade compatible) featuring a certified chemical assay of not less than 98.0 percent in a 500 g laboratory container. Multi-crystallized and purified under strict QReC global laboratory specifications without anti-caking conditioning additives. Strictly tested to enforce minimal water-insoluble matter (strictly below 0.005 percent) and sulfated ash (residue on ignition below 0.01 percent), alongside ultra-low ppm limits of chloride, sulfate, nitrate, and heavy metals (such as iron, lead, copper, zinc, and arsenic). Certified DNase and RNase-free, guaranteeing compatibility with sensitive biological and enzymatic workflows. Dry, uniform translucent crystals dissolve cleanly and rapidly in water and alcohols to yield crystal-clear, neutral, particulate-free solutions. Packaged in a heavy-duty, moisture-barrier polymer container equipped with an airtight double hermetic seal.
  • Physical Properties: Colorless transparent deliquescent crystals or fine white crystalline powder. Faint, characteristic acetic odor accompanied by slight ammoniacal notes. Highly deliquescent under ambient atmospheric conditions, rapidly absorbing moisture from the air to liquefy; undergoes slow volatilization and loses ammonia upon prolonged ambient exposure, shifting to an acidic ammonium acid acetate stoichiometry. Melting point is approximately 112 to 114 degrees Celsius. Combustible solid under high thermal stress. Aqueous solutions exhibit a near-neutral pH (approximately 6.5 to 7.5 for a 5 percent aqueous solution at room temperature) due to equivalent ionization constants of the weak acid and weak base.
  • Solubility: Extremely and readily soluble in water (approximately 148 grams per 100 milliliters at 20 degrees Celsius, increasing to over 200 grams per 100 milliliters in boiling water); freely soluble in ethanol, methanol, and glycerol; practically insoluble in diethyl ether and acetone.
  • Key Use: Universally utilized as a premier volatile mobile phase buffer additive in High-Performance Liquid Chromatography coupled with Mass Spectrometry (HPLC-MS and LC-MS) for pharmaceutical, proteomic, and metabolomic bioanalysis; sublimes cleanly in the electrospray ionization (ESI) interface without forming non-volatile salt crusts or suppressing ionization. Extensively applied in molecular biology protocols for the selective ethanol/isopropanol precipitation of DNA and RNA; unlike sodium salts, ammonium acetate selectively prevents dNTP co-precipitation and maintains protein solubility, streamlining downstream molecular workflows. Heavily employed as the standard extraction reagent in agricultural soil analysis for determining Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC) and quantifying exchangeable nutrient cations (potassium, calcium, magnesium, sodium) via atomic absorption spectroscopy. Serves as a volatile sublimation buffer in lyophilization and protein freeze-drying protocols. Widely used as a mild organic base catalyst in synthetic transformations, such as the Knoevenagel condensation.

Safety & Hazards

  • Classification: Non-hazardous substance under standard international GHS criteria in routine laboratory handling. Exceptionally low acute toxicity profile; non-corrosive and non-carcinogenic solid. Particulate dust may exert mild mechanical irritation to ocular, dermal, and upper respiratory tissues.
  • Health Risks: Direct ocular contact causes transient mechanical stinging, conjunctival redness, and tearing. Prolonged dermal contact can cause localized dryness, erythema, or superficial skin irritation. Inhalation of airborne particulate dust irritates the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract, inducing coughing and sneezing. Ingestion of substantial quantities provokes gastrointestinal irritation, abdominal discomfort, nausea, vomiting, and osmotic diarrhea.
  • First Aid Measures: Flush affected eyes thoroughly with clean running water for at least 15 minutes while stripping contaminated clothing; remove contact lenses promptly and seek medical advice if irritation persists. Wash exposed skin with soap and water. In case of dust inhalation, relocate the individual to fresh air. If accidentally swallowed in substantial amounts, rinse mouth thoroughly, administer water in moderate amounts, and seek medical attention if gastric discomfort persists.

Handling & Storage

  • Storage: Highly Deliquescent, Volatile Salt. Ambient atmospheric exposure triggers rapid liquefaction into a concentrated brine and slow loss of ammonia. Must be preserved in its original, tightly closed QReC container. Store in a clean, strictly dry, cool, and well-ventilated dedicated chemical store at controlled temperatures (below 25 to 30 degrees Celsius), sheltered from atmospheric moisture and direct sunlight. Keep strictly segregated from strong oxidizing agents, concentrated mineral acids (which liberate volatile acetic acid fumes), and strong caustic alkalis (which instantaneously liberate pungent ammonia gas).
  • Precautions: Standard laboratory PPE is mandatory, including protective nitrile gloves, safety glasses, and a protective lab coat. Re-seal container cap tightly immediately after sampling to prevent deliquescent caking and maintain analytical stoichiometry. Minimize dust generation during weighing and dispensing.
