Calcium oxide (Quicklime)

Product Overview & Quality

  • Product Name: Calcium oxide (Quicklime)
  • Brand: Kemaus (Product Code: KA-1350)
  • Grade: Laboratory Grade (Lab Grade) with a dependable purity of 90 percent or higher. Produced under Kemaus standard laboratory quality control to ensure uniform reactivity and minimal heavy metal trace background. Excellently suited for general academic science laboratories, pH adjustments, and industrial formulation development.
  • Physical Properties: Odorless, white to pale yellowish-white fine powder or hard granules. It acts as a strong corrosive base.
  • Critical Chemical Nature: Reacts vigorously with water. Upon hydration, it undergoes a highly exothermic reaction (releases intense heat) and transitions into calcium hydroxide.
  • Key Use: Widely utilized as an industrial-strength laboratory desiccant (drying agent) to eliminate moisture in chemical synthesis and gas drying setups. Commonly applied as a neutralizing agent to neutralize acidic chemical wastes or adjust solution baselines. Also functions as a chemical reactant for trapping carbon dioxide gas and in wastewater treatment modeling.

Safety & Hazards (Critical & Corrosive)

  • Classification: Causes skin irritation. Causes serious eye damage. May cause respiratory irritation.
  • Health Risks: Direct eye or skin contact triggers severe burning sensations, chemical burns, and potential permanent tissue destruction, which is accelerated by the thermal energy released upon meeting biological moisture. Inhalation of fine airborne dust causes severe irritation to the upper respiratory tract, inducing coughing and choking.
  • First Aid Measures: In case of exposure, brush off any loose dry powder from tissues first, then immediately flush affected eyes or skin with plenty of flowing water for at least 15 to 30 minutes. Seek urgent medical attention immediately.

Handling & Storage

  • Storage: Highly Moisture and Air Sensitive. It aggressively absorbs ambient water vapor and carbon dioxide from the surrounding environment, causing it to degrade into calcium carbonate over time. Must be stored in the original, tightly sealed Kemaus container. Keep in a strictly dry, cool, and well-ventilated dedicated chemical zone at stable room temperature (below 30 degrees Celsius). Keep strictly away from water, moisture, acids, and organic materials.
  • Precautions: Wear standard personal protective equipment (PPE), including laboratory chemical gloves, protective safety goggles, and a fine particulate dust respirator. Avoid handling in high-humidity areas and prevent dust clouds from building up.
