Formaldehyde solution (Formalin)

Product Overview & Quality

  • Product Name: Formaldehyde solution (Formalin)
  • Grade: Analytical Reagent (AR Grade), providing high stability and purity for clinical histology and medical research.
  • Concentration: 36.5-38.0% (typically stabilized with 10-15% Methanol to prevent polymerization).
  • Physical Properties: Clear, colorless liquid with a highly pungent, suffocating odor.
  • Key Use: Tissue fixation, biological specimen preservation, and as a potent disinfectant.

Safety & Hazards (Critical)

  • Classification: Confirmed Human Carcinogen and mutagen.
  • Health Risks: Toxic if swallowed, inhaled, or in contact with skin. Causes severe skin burns, eye damage, and is a potent respiratory irritant.
  • Sensitization: May cause an allergic skin reaction (contact dermatitis) or asthma symptoms if inhaled.
  • First Aid Measures: Immediately flush affected eyes or skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. Move to fresh air immediately if vapors are inhaled. Seek urgent medical attention.

Handling & Storage

  • Storage: Store in a cool, well-ventilated area (ideally 15-25°C). Do NOT refrigerate, as low temperatures induce the precipitation of paraformaldehyde (white solid). Keep away from heat and direct sunlight.
  • Precautions: Full PPE required, including a chemical vapor respirator, chemical-resistant gloves, and safety goggles. Handle strictly within a fume hood.
