Sodium iodide

Product Overview & Quality

  • Product Name: Sodium iodide
  • Brand: Kemaus (Product Code: KA-486)
  • Grade: Laboratory Grade (Lab Grade) with a premium purity of 99 percent or higher. Manufactured under Kemaus standard laboratory quality control guidelines to ensure consistent chemical reactivity. Excellently suited for academic science laboratories, organic synthesis, and general industrial analysis.
  • Physical Properties: Odorless, white crystalline powder with a bitter, salty taste.
  • Solubility: Highly soluble in water (mildly exothermic dissolution); readily soluble in alcohol and acetone.
  • Key Use: Heavily utilized as a core analytical reagent in iodometric titrations. Functions as an effective iodide source in organic synthesis modifications (such as the Finkelstein reaction). Also applied in physical chemistry research and specific tracer determination studies.

Safety & Hazards (Critical)

  • Classification: Causes skin irritation. Causes serious eye irritation. May cause damage to organs (Thyroid) through prolonged or repeated exposure.
  • Health Risks: Direct eye contact causes significant irritation, tearing, and redness. Prolonged skin exposure leads to localized discomfort. Chronic ingestion or overexposure to iodide ions can impact thyroid gland functionality.
  • Environmental Hazards: Toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects. Dispose of strictly in accordance with chemical waste regulations.
  • First Aid Measures: Flush affected eyes or skin immediately with plenty of flowing water for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical advice if irritation develops or persists.

Handling & Storage

  • Storage: Highly Hygroscopic, Light, and Air Sensitive. It aggressively absorbs atmospheric moisture and undergoes air oxidation. Exposure to ambient air and light causes the white powder to discolor into a yellowish-brown shade due to the release of free iodine. Must be stored in the original, tightly sealed Kemaus container in a cool, dry, and dark area at stable room temperature (below 30 degrees Celsius).
  • Precautions: Wear standard personal protective equipment (PPE), including laboratory gloves, safety glasses, and a particulate dust respirator. Ensure the container is capped tightly immediately after each use to preserve its white crystalline status and chemical purity.
