Sodium metasilicate

Product Overview & Quality

  • Product Name: Sodium metasilicate
  • Brand: Kemaus (Product Code: KA-707)
  • Grade: Laboratory Grade (Lab Grade). Formulated under Kemaus standard quality control to ensure uniform composition and rapid solubility profile. Excellently suited for general chemical experiments, alkaline pH conditioning, environmental water treatment modeling, and industrial detergent R&D.
  • Physical Properties: Odorless, white powder or white crystalline granules. It acts as a strong corrosive alkaline material.
  • Solubility: Highly and rapidly soluble in water, yielding a strongly alkaline aqueous solution; insoluble in alcohol.
  • Key Use: Widely utilized as a heavy-duty laboratory cleaning agent for removing stubborn grease, oils, and organic residues from glassware and metal apparatus. Commonly applied as a pH regulator to establish alkaline baselines in analytical chemistry reactions. Used as a coagulant aid and heavy metal precipitant in industrial wastewater treatment research, and functions as a core structural builder in synthesizing advanced detergents, geopolymer cements, and protective coatings.

Safety & Hazards (Critical & Corrosive)

  • Classification: Causes severe skin burns and eye damage. May cause respiratory irritation.
  • Health Risks: Direct tissue contact triggers immediate, intense chemical burns and severe pain, with potential for permanent ocular damage. Inhalation of fine airborne dust aggressively irritates the upper respiratory tract, inducing severe coughing or throat irritation. Ingestion causes immediate corrosive destruction to gastrointestinal membranes.
  • First Aid Measures: In case of contact, immediately flush affected eyes or skin with plenty of flowing water for at least 15 minutes. Seek urgent medical attention immediately.

Handling & Storage

  • Storage: Highly Hygroscopic. It readily absorbs ambient water vapor from the surrounding air, leading to severe caking or clumping. Must be stored in its original, tightly sealed Kemaus container. Keep in a strictly dry, cool, and well-ventilated dedicated chemical zone at stable room temperature (below 30 degrees Celsius). Keep strictly away from acids and active metals such as aluminum, zinc, or tin, as alkaline reactions with these metals can liberate flammable hydrogen gas.
  • Precautions: Wear standard personal protective equipment (PPE), including laboratory chemical gloves, protective safety goggles, and a fine particulate dust respirator. Avoid handling in high-humidity environments.
