Ammonium thiocyanate
Product Overview & Quality
- Product Name: Ammonium thiocyanate
- Grade: Analytical Reagent (AR Grade), providing high purity ( 99%) for accurate detection of iron ions and other analytical procedures.
- Physical Properties: Colorless to white crystalline solid; odorless.
- Solubility: Highly soluble in water and ethanol. Dissolving in water produces a significant cooling effect (endothermic).
- Key Use: Primarily used as an indicator for iron(III) detection (forming a deep blood-red complex), in photography, and as an additive in textile dyeing.
Safety & Hazards
- Classification: Harmful if swallowed, inhaled, or in contact with skin. Toxic to aquatic life.
- Chemical Warning: Contact with strong acids releases highly toxic hydrogen cyanide gas.
- Health Risks: Causes serious eye and skin irritation. Prolonged exposure may interfere with thyroid function (goitrogenic effect).
- First Aid Measures: Flush affected eyes or skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. Move to fresh air if inhaled. Seek medical attention immediately for ingestion or significant exposure.
Handling & Storage
- Storage: Highly hygroscopic and deliquescent; it can absorb enough moisture from the air to dissolve. Must be stored in a hermetically sealed container in a cool, dry place.
- Precautions: Wear comprehensive PPE, including chemical-resistant gloves and safety goggles. Keep away from strong oxidizing agents and acids.
