Phenolphthalein solution 1%
Product Overview & Quality
- Product Name: Phenolphthalein solution 1% (Ready-to-use indicator solution)
- Brand: QReC (Product Code: QR-P3021-0-1000)
- Grade: Indicator Grade / Analytical Reagent (AR Grade). Manufactured with a certified concentration of 1 percent (weight/volume) dissolved in a standardized ethanol-water matrix under QReC global laboratory quality systems. Meticulously tested for visual sensitivity and color-transition precision. Completely free from particulate contamination and background chromatic interferences, delivering sharp, immediate color transitions at the equivalence point and eliminating weighing discrepancies associated with manual indicator preparations.
- Physical Properties: Clear, colorless liquid with a faint alcoholic odor. Functions as an optical pH indicator: remains colorless in acidic and neutral solutions (below pH 8.2) and transitions sharply to pink through deep magenta in alkaline environments (transition pH range 8.2 to 10.0). Flammable liquid due to alcoholic solvent constituents.
- Solubility: Completely miscible in all proportions with water, alcohol, and polar organic solvents.
- Key Use: Widely utilized as the primary visual end-point indicator in acid-base titrations, especially for weak acid-strong base and strong acid-strong base analytical systems. Extensively applied in food, beverage, and dairy laboratories to quantify total titratable acidity and lactic acid levels. Commonly used to determine free fatty acid (FFA) values and acid numbers in fats, edible oils, and petrochemical lubricants. Routinely used in concrete carbonation depth assessments in civil engineering and general environmental testing matrices.
Safety & Hazards
- Classification: Flammable liquid and vapor. Causes serious eye irritation. Contains phenolphthalein substance, which is classified under GHS as suspected of causing genetic defects and suspected of causing cancer.
- Health Risks: Direct eye contact triggers immediate stinging irritation, watering, and conjunctival redness. Prolonged dermal exposure may strip natural skin oils, resulting in dryness or minor localized irritation. Inhalation of solvent vapors in confined areas may induce mild headaches, dizziness, or drowsiness. Ingestion causes gastrointestinal irritation, abdominal discomfort, and nausea.
- First Aid Measures: Flush affected eyes or skin thoroughly with continuous running water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing. In case of inhalation, move the individual to fresh air. If accidentally swallowed, rinse mouth thoroughly with clean water and seek medical evaluation promptly.
Handling & Storage
- Storage: Flammable Liquid Formulation. Must be stored in its original, tightly sealed QReC chemical container. Keep in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated chemical cabinet at stable room temperature (below 30 degrees Celsius), sheltered from direct sunlight, thermal sources, open flames, and electrical sparks. Keep strictly segregated from strong oxidizing agents.
- Precautions: Standard laboratory PPE is mandatory, including protective chemical gloves, safety eyewear, and a lab coat. Keep container tightly capped immediately after dispensing to prevent volatile ethanol evaporation and maintain indicator concentration accuracy.
